Abstract

A extração de terceiros molares, popularmente conhecidos como dente siso, é um dos procedimentos mais corriqueiros em cirurgia bucal. Atualmente, a exodontia profilática dos terceiros molares gera muita discussão e controvérsia entre os cirurgiões-dentistas. Os motivos que sustentam a ideia da exodontia profilática incluem o risco de impacção, de pericoronarite, de lesões cariosas, de alterações periodontais na distal dos segundos molares, de apinhamento e de cistos odontogênicos. Por outro lado, a exodontia dos terceiros molares, por mais que seja um procedimento cirúrgico rotineiro, é uma intervenção invasiva e que pode gerar acidentes e complicações. O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever as indicações para a remoção profilática de terceiros molares, confrontando-as com as possíveis complicações relacionadas ao procedimento cirúrgico, bem como relatar as principais vantagens e desvantagens de ambos os tratamentos. Este trabalho constou de uma pesquisa descritiva e exploratória, sendo realizado por meio do levantamento de referências bibliográficas e revisão integrativa da literatura. Esse processo foi realizado por meio de busca na Internet, onde foram utilizadas, para consulta, as seguintes bases eletrônicas de dados: SCIELO, LILACS e PubMed. A busca de dados identificou 1.314 artigos com possibilidade de serem selecionados, sendo que, deste total, 21 artigos formaram a base para a interpretação das informações. É necessário entender a particularidade de cada paciente em relação aos terceiros molares presentes na cavidade bucal, atentando-se para o correto diagnóstico para propor a melhor opção de tratamento, seja ele preventivo ou terapêutico.
