Abstract

ABSTRACT

Populations living in rural areas are subject to poor sanitation and poor water supply. The purpose of the work was to study the health-environment aspects, with an emphasis on Staphylococcus spp. isolated from drinking water and samples from the oropharynx of the Lago do Limão Community. The strains were subjected to the antimicrobial susceptibility test by the disc diffusion method and, detection of virulence genes that encode the production of biofilm, enterotoxins and oxacillin resistance. 26 strains of Staphylococcus spp. were isolated,  being 15 in the drinking water samples and 11 in the oropharynx samples. . In the antimicrobial test, strains isolated from water were resistant to ampicillin, azithromycin and erythromycin, and the strains isolated from oropharynx were resistant to clindamycin and gentamycin. Among the analyzed genes, the IcaD, ETa and IcaA genes were found in the isolated strains. The strains of Staphylococcus aureus showed similarity in the strains of S. aureus present in the water and in the oropharynx, both for antibiotic resistance and in the presence of virulence genes. With these results, it was possible to detect virulence genes among strains isolated, both from community drinking water and oropharyngeal secretion from these residents.
