Abstract

O presente estudo teve como objetivo geral destacar por meio de uma revisão de literatura como a doença periodontal contribuirá para o agravamento da doença de Alzheimer. Têm-se como objetivos específicos: Identificar as formas de aparecimento da doença periodontal e da doença Alzheimer; Avaliar a correlação da bactéria P. gingivalis com a doença Alzheimer; Estimar a prevalência de doença periodontal com base nos achados da literatura; Reconhecer a doença periodontal como um importante agravante de saúde pública; Associar a doença periodontal e o prejuízo cognitivo. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa de literatura. A estratégia de busca foi baseada em artigos indexados nas bases de dados eletrônicas SCIELO, LILACS e MEDLINE, no período de 2016 a 2021 totalizando 20 (vinte) artigos. No levantamento foram utilizados os seguintes termos de busca: “Alzheimer's Disease and periodontis”, “Odontologia”, “Alzheimer” e “Periodontia”. Esta revisão da literatura contribui para o entendimento das vias patológicas compartilhadas por ambas as doenças, como dano oxidativo e inflamação. Não há evidências suficientes para determinar uma associação entre essas duas patologias, portanto, considera-se necessário a realização de estudos para determinar se a periodontite é capaz de induzir ou exacerbar a neuroinflamação que irá desencadear a doença de alzheimer.
