Abstract

Seeking to guarantee the continuous flow of goods and services from the Mixed Ombrophilous Forest, a typology of great importance for the South of the Country, there is a need to improve methods and studies that enable the acquisition of knowledge of the plant structure, in order to propose appropriate actions management and conservation. Alternatives such as the use of equation adjustment allow the estimation of variables such as total height, a variable that is difficult to obtain in the field and of great importance for the knowledge of the vertical and dimensional structure of the forest. This work aims to select the best mathematical model for estimating the total height of trees in a Mixed Rainforest, by diameter class at breast height (DBH). The study area is located in the municipality of Fazenda Rio Grande - PR, on the premises of the Experimental Farm Gralha Azul, of PUCPR. To determine the diametric classes, the data collected in the last periodic measurement of the Long-Term Ecological Project (PELD) were used and for the assembly of the classes, the Sturges methodology was applied. Based on the diametric distribution of the forest, data were collected to adjust the equations, considering a minimum number of 30 trees per class and the diversity of species. The collected data were recorded in a field form and later tabulated in Excel spreadsheets. To adjust the equations by diametric class, 12 mathematical models were tested. To choose the best model, the statistical parameters were analyzed: adjusted determination coefficient (r²aj), standard error of the percentage estimate (Syx%) and standardized residual plot. Among the models of best fit for the diametric classes and for forest, the models "d", "e" and "h" stand out. The “d” model presented itself as the best model for the diametric classes: 10 to 20 cm and 40 to 50 cm, while the “h” model was the best in the other classes (20 to 30 cm, 30 to 40 cm, 50 to 60 cm and greater than 60 cm) and to the forest. The best fit selected was obtained with the “h” model adjusted for the forest data showing R²aj of 0.95 and Syx% of 13,02. The graphical analysis of the standardized residues demonstrated the low uniformity of distribution of the points along the x axis in most of the adjusted models, presenting good performance only for the diameter class of 30 to 40 cm and for forest. In general, the analyzed parameters showed good performance for the forest, thus demonstrating that the method of grouping the data in diametric classes addressed in this work did not infer an improvement in the performance of the adjustment of the equations.
