Abstract

Introdução: O processo de envelhecimento é marcado por diversas alterações morfológicas e funcionais. A redução da massa e força muscular, fenômeno conhecido como sarcopenia, favorece diversas desordens metabólicas, aumentando o risco de morbimortalidade. Intervenções não-farmacológicas são estudadas, com intuito de conter o desenvolvimento ou o avanço dessa condição. A suplementação proteica é comumente proposta, sendo o macronutriente mais importante para o aumento da força e da massa muscular. Objetivos: Revisar os estudos publicados que avaliaram os efeitos da suplementação proteica sobre a força e massa muscular de idosos. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma revisão de literatura narrativa. Para tanto, foram utilizados os seguintes descritores e palavras-chave: Elderly; Dietary Protein; Protein Supplementation; Muscle Mass; Muscle Strength; Sarcopenia. Como critério de inclusão, inserimos os estudos mais atuais (últimos 5 anos) sobre a temática. Portanto, apenas estudos que investigaram o efeito da suplementação proteica sobre parâmetros relacionados à sarcopenia, como força e massa muscular de idosos (idade maior ou igual a 65 anos). Todos os estudos foram publicados em revistas internacionais, revisados por pares e estão no idioma inglês. Resultados: Semelhante aos estudos publicados nas últimas décadas, os estudos publicados nos últimos anos verificaram efeitos semelhantes da suplementação proteica sobre parâmetros relacionados à sarcopenia, como força e massa muscular. Contudo, os efeitos positivos observados são indissociáveis do treinamento de força e, ainda, proteínas de alta qualidade parece ser mais vantajosas em comparação às proteínas de menor qualidade. Finalmente, o momento de suplementação não parece ser um fator interveniente. Conclusão: A suplementação proteica, combinada ao treino de força, aumenta a força e a massa muscular de idosos.
